We are now back home again and it was a delightfully uneventful trip home. We left Malmo church Sunday afternoon, after spending some more time with our parents and friends. Our plan was to get to Golden and possibly Revelstoke, depending on how Ryan was doing. I fed Ryan and we started our trip out west. We had to stop in Airdrie because we felt that Ryan needed some more food. We didn't want to push our luck and be in between towns when Ryan needed something NOW!!
We managed to get to Revelstoke with only one minor meltdown. Just outside the avalanche tunnels, Ryan decided that he was so hungry that he couldn't wait any longer. On that road, there are signs all over the place that say don't stop so we couldn't do much to help him. I put my hand back and he was sucking on my finger, which I really hate doing because at that point in our trip, my hands probably weren't all that clean. It was dark and we were getting more and more sad as we had to listen to our little boy scream for food. We managed to find a place that was plowed and we pulled over. I fed Ryan as we watched all the traffic that we had passed now pass us, including some really slow semi's. With Ryan full, we finished up that leg of our trip.
After getting into a Super 8 hotel, I sat in the room with Ryan while Tyler filled the vehicle up with gas. I'm not sure what we did that night but it was nice that the next morning was nice and relaxed. The other long trips that we've made, we have had to wake up super early to get on the road. We were able to take our time and it resulted in a much less stressful trip.
After a decent sleep, we got out of bed and I went to get some breakfast from the hotel. It wasn't anything special and in fact the chocolate chip muffins tasted like plastic but it was filling. We took off in hopes of getting to Kamloops before having to stop again which we were successful at doing. We stopped to get some more gas and to get Ryan out of his seat.
Once we got back into the vehicle, we decided to try to get to Hope for our next stop. We set out and on the way we saw a bit of wildlife. We saw 3 coyotes and some eagles. I don't really consider eagles wildlife any more because they are so common out here that it would be like calling a seagull wildlife. We ended up stopping in Merritt for lunch at Subway. We let Ryan stretch out for about an hour before we took off again. We still had to make a pit stop in Hope because the diet I had been eating on the trip finally caught up with me and I would classify the need to stop as "Emergency" status.
We got to Vancouver that afternoon and stopped in on some friends. And it was so good to see them again. While sitting at a light, we saw a girl crossing the street with a rat on her shoulder. That was gross and we didn't count that rat as wildlife. After visiting with our friends, we left to go to where we would be spending the evening, with the same friend we stayed with on our way out in December. She is so fun to be around. Our evening was fun and pretty much uneventful, as we watched her son and our son most of the night.
The next morning, we lounged around her condo, talking with them and eating breakfast. We didn't end up leaving her place until around 11 am as we had to catch our first ferry at 12:30. We made it to the ferry with no problems and waited in line until it was time to board. It was a quick trip over to Nanaimo where we stopped for some lunch. We went to A&W because I wanted to try the sirloin burger. I knew that if we didn't stop to eat it, I would be thinking about it for the next 2 months without any chance of getting one. It wasn't as great as I was expecting it to be. It pretty much tasted like a regular burger.
We headed out to Tyler's cousin's place, where we would be spending the night. We had given ourselves 2 days to get up the island so we only had to drive about 2 hours on Monday. On our way, I decided to take a bit of a nap so I closed my eyes and listened to the music as it lulled me to sleep. I woke up and was shocked to see white. It had started snowing so hard and every thing was so white, it was crazy. The roads weren't icy but they were slushy and wet. We made it safely to Stacie's place and got to meet her adorable little girl. And I fell in love with the house they are living in too. It was great to see her again. We played with the babies and had a good meal and went to bed for another night.
We got up and were spoiled at breakfast. There was waffles from scratch, bacon and eggs. It was so nice to have a meal like that again. We said our goodbyes, knowing that we would probably stop there again on our trip home in a few months.
Port Hardy was our final destination and we made great time. Our first order of business was to get our little man fed again so we pulled into a parking stall at the local mall. After he was finished, we went into a few stores to look for things we had on our list. Tyler wanted to see if the sports/hunting store carried some ammo. I went to the craft store to see if they had some cross stitching fabric for my next project. I'm going to work on a pattern that is similar to my orca one, only this one has elk on it. It was a pattern that Tyler picked out for me to do when we were in Port Hardy for my first ultrasound. I haven't been able to even start it yet because, first I needed thread, then I needed to find the rest of the thread when I couldn't find half of it the first time, and then I needed to find the material which proved to be nearly impossible. I finally found something that would work and I'm so excited to start on this project. I know that it will take me forever to finish it because Ryan is way to cute and I plan on playing and staring at him often.
We boarded the ferry and as we did, we found it was strange that the ferry workers didn't put us at the front of the ship. That's where the people going to Bella Bella always go as we are the first ones off the boat. But, we didn't think too much about it and unloaded our things for the 8 hour ride. We set up camp in a corner looking out onto to ocean. We kind of spread out over an entire row of chairs. There weren't that many people on the ferry so we weren't too worried about taking up too much space. Tyler put up the play pen for Ryan to sleep in and then we sailed away from the terminal.
It got dark and soon we couldn't see the beautiful coastline any more. I had been reading a book and Tyler was doing some studying for most of the trip. We then pulled out the laptop and watched a few things to wind down our stay on the ferry.
We pulled into Bella Bella around 11:20 and made it home. Of course, as a welcome to us, the weather decided to show us what we had missed out on the last 2 months and it was raining. But what else can you expect. We unpacked the things we needed for the night and headed off to bed. The funny thing is that on the ferry, I was thinking the whole time, "Oh man, I can't wait to crawl into bed and just sleep. I'm tired from this 4 day journey". How silly is that? It's like I forgot Ryan would never let me sleep through the night at this age. And of course he was up a few times.
Our day yesterday was spent unloading the car, which Tyler wouldn't let me help out with. His boss stopped by to say hi and to see our handsome prince. After Tyler unloaded everything, our place looked like a bomb went off. There were things everywhere and it seemed that it would never be clean again. We did our best to contain the mess to either the living room or Ryan's room but it's amazing how sometimes our best just isn't good enough.
After sort of cleaning up, we bathed Ryan and then took him over to the hospital for some show and tell. We were over there for about an hour, visiting with Tyler's co-workers. We then took him over to the RCMP detachment and I got to talk with my old co-workers. So much has changed over there.
We invited our friends Kendra and Jessica over for that evening. Kendra came over right after she was done work and it was good to catch up with her. It's been a long 2 months without seeing each other and we enjoyed dinner together. She left to do school work. Later that evening, Jessica came over and wanted to hear all about Ryan's birth and the trip and we talked about a bunch of different things.
She left and I started this blog. I'm learning a few things about being a mom and one of them is that it's nearly impossible to finish any task I start that will take longer then 20 minutes. Ryan will always need something before I'm done, which is totally fine. I'm thinking that I might have to start each day's blog in the morning and it will be completed by the time I go to bed at night. I'm also learning to look at food differently. I'm starting to think of it in terms of whether it will taste good cold or not as I haven't been able to finish a warm meal since Ryan was born. I'm not complaining because Ryan is my everything now and I would do anything for him, cold food is the least of my worries.
Last night was a rough night and I'm so glad to have Tyler in my life. We put Ryan to bed at around midnight and he was up again to feast at around 3. I fed him and after he fell asleep in my arms, I put him back in his bed. A few minutes later, he was up again just squawking away. I had already been up for about an hour so it was hard to drag myself out of bed to settle him down again. Tyler got up and I fell right to sleep. I found out this morning that Tyler was walking around with Ryan for an hour and a half before Ryan finally fell asleep. I was up feeding him again at some point during the night and the same thing happened. Tyler got up later to settle him. The funny thing is that throughout the night when I had to get up, I was a little irritated at Tyler because it seemed like he was just ignoring Ryan when he was talking and awake. I felt that I was doing everything and when you are already exhausted, being annoyed comes easily. And then I find out this morning that Tyler was up the same amount as I was. I'm so thankful for Tyler for doing that. I know he isn't feeling good and it's tough to get up so I'm very grateful to him for being there to help me. It does make me a little scared though. With Tyler going back to work, he is going to need much more sleep at night and I will have to be up with Ryan settling him down. I just hope I manage to sleep enough during the day to be able to get up each time with my little stink bug.
Right now, Tyler is in a meeting at work and Ryan is sleeping on the couch beside me. I have tried to put him in his bed a few times but he always starts getting annoyed and irritated so I take him out to settle him again. I finally just put him to sleep and laid him on the couch beside me. He has been sleeping there for about an hour now and is now just stirring. I'm getting kicked in the side as he stretches and waves his sweet little arms around. He is just so cute!!!!
As silly as this is, I am missing my kitty a little. We didn't have enough room to bring her back with us so she is staying at my parents place. It's strange to be here without her. I find myself looking for her or walking around the place where her food and water usually are. And I don't even have my deck cats any more to compensate. Oh well, I have Ryan to keep myself preoccupied with.
