There are a few things I know about my day even before I get out of bed in the morning.
I know that I will probably crush a few Cheerios on my way to the kitchen, bathroom, living room... really, any place in our small apartment. I know that if I try to clean up the Cheerios that Ryan spreads around, I will have to touch all the soggy ones that fall out of his mouth. Some how there are always soggy Cheerios no matter how long it's been since Ryan was eating them. Soggy Cheerios get stuck to pretty much everything that touches them, and so I also know that if I accidentally kneel in one, it is forever imbedded in my pants.
I know that as a mother, I have social duties to make certain comments to passersby who mention things about Ryan. For example, when someone says, "My, he's getting big!", I have to say, "Yup, he's growing like a weed." or "Yeah, it's hard to believe." Or someone will ask, "How old is he now?" And I will say, "10 months already." That person will almost always say, "It goes fast doesn't it." Every mother out there knows about these social interactions and how annoying they can get. What's nice is when someone asks a question or says something that is kind of out of the blue. The other day, we were standing in line at the store and someone asks to see his teeth. It seemed pretty random to us.
I also know that I will always be greeted with smiles and giggles when I get him from his naps, his Taylor Hall doll will be on the floor and Ryan will be standing in a corner of his crib talking to himself.
I know I will call Ryan by various other names, such as Sleepy-potomus, hungry-potomus, Collapsable Fink (It's a Dr. Seuss character), Walk-a-potomus, Mr. Bug, Bug, Stinker, and whatever else comes to mind. It might become a problem when he starts talking and doesn't actually know his own name but for now, he just looks at me and smiles and that's all I care about.
I know that no matter how quiet people think they are being, they are still always too loud. I know that as soon as I lay Ryan to sleep I'm on edge because 7 people have the potential to ruin his sleep. The preferable decibel for every other person on the planet is 0. I know that very little upsets me but if you wake my cranky, finally sleeping boy I will huff and puff to myself and complain to Tyler and my sisters. I wont actually say anything to the person making the noise though, which is silly and pure nonsense but I'm non combative. It's something I'm working on though. A few nights ago, our upstairs neighbor kept me awake until 12:45 and by that time, I was too upset from being awake so late that I couldn't fall asleep. And when she finally stopped opening and closing drawers, all I could hear was the peaceful sound of Tyler breathing, which of course drove me crazy. I tried sleeping on the couch away from Tyler but then a slow ferry went past and those things are loud at 3 in the morning. I did finally fall asleep and then Ryan decided he was going to wake up at 3:37. Basically, it wasn't a good night but to get back to my point, I actually sent her a text message asking her to keep it down that late at night. And it worked. She's still super loud but I think I can hear her at least trying to be quieter. It's tough though because these apartments weren't made with a great amount of skill so every step she takes it squeaks like crazy, and of course when she turns the water on, the water rushes down the walls in Ryan's room. There isn't anything we can do about that though.
Today was a good day. Ryan got 2 quality naps so I got some down time. I'm reading a good book so it's nice to have lots of time to sit. I made swarties hash browns for dinner and I sliced my palm with the grater thing. That hurt and continues to hurt every time I move my hand because the wound kind of opens a little every time I do something. Ryan didn't enjoy his portion of dinner so I gave him crackers and peanut butter instead, which he then smeared in his eye causing him to cry. I cleaned it out but he just smeared more in there. I just put him in the tub and rinsed all of him at the same time. The problem with doing that is that the bath water turned mirky and brown so I'm not sure he actually got cleaner. It's more likely that there is now a fine layer of peanut butter all over his body instead of just his arms, hands and face.
We are now just relaxing, finding ourselves mysteriously hungry even though dinner was really filling. We might both read our books tonight until bed time. Is there anything better then a really good book? No. I don't think so.

November 26, 2012
Right now, Ryan is in his crib and he sounds like he's starting a car in there. His cries seriously sound like a car being started in the dead of winter and it just wont start. He's so close to falling asleep. It's pretty cute to listen to all his sounds. He's fighting it so hard and it makes me smile.
We had a good weekend. Tyler wasn't on call so we got to hang out most of the weekend as a little family. Tyler went out hunting on each morning, excited that he finally was able to hunt for the first time since we've been out here. But he came back empty handed. He did see 5 otters swim within arms reach of him and he said they were very cute. The only deer he got came in the form of pictures from his uncles. It was almost cruel.
While Tyler was out hunting, I stayed at home with the Ry man. He makes my day so happy. He's such a happy smily boy. He surprised me by sleeping until 8:30 on Saturday morning so that was nice. It's funny how the definition of sleeping in changes when you have a kid. We played, ate some food, napped and played some more. Tyler was home before noon on each day so we all got to spend some nice time together.
We were invited over to our friends place for a Grey Cup party. It was low key and since we aren't super fans of football and have Ryan, it was tough to just sit there and watch the game. But we stuck it out and were there until the end. It was nice to get out and hang out with other people. My only complaint is that going to other peoples homes is tough because no one seems to baby proof their place. Even though it is enjoyable, it's pretty tough. The great thing is that people without babies usually have a need to take care of other people's babies so Ryan was passed around a bit. It's nice break for us.
And today was a good day too. Tyler was working the late shift so he got up with Ryan and I got to sleep in again, until 8ish. It was so nice. I've always had issues getting to sleep and it's still a problem for me. Since we live in the bottom middle unit of our apartment complex, we hear everything. That just makes me anxious because I don't want Ry to wake up so then I usually wake up when I hear someone coming home late. We have asked to move but weren't allowed to. We'll try again in the new year because I can't lose this much sleep.
The weather has been nice the last few days. It's cool and crisp but it's nice walking weather. Ryan and I try to go for a walk every day. It helps settle him down for an afternoon nap and gets us out of the house.
It's Dexter night for us. This season hasn't been overly thrilling but I'm sure it will get better, or at least that's the hope.
I've been working on a few crafts these last few months which has taken me away from my cross stitching but now that they are all done, I can get back to my elk. This is a project that has been in the works for almost 2 years now so I'm eager to get it over with.

November 24, 2012
It's been 2 months since we last posted anything and to be honest, it's kind of been nice. I know people are pretty interested in Ryan and what he's up to but writing it out every day would probably make me feel like we don't do much. And that's because we don't... really.
A usual day involves waking up at whatever time Ryan decides to make us get out of bed. Sleeping in is no longer in our vocabulary, or at least it's definition has changed dramatically. For a while now, Ryan has been waking up any where between 6 to 7. Tyler has been getting out of bed to change him and give him breakfast because on a regular night, I'm out of bed with Ryan about 5 times. We are trying to change that but the Ry man isn't making that easy. I'm out of bed soon after because I can hear them in the kitchen or living room and it sounds like they are having so much fun and I don't want to miss out on it.
Tyler heads off to work or to go hunting and I get to play with my son. It's almost always the same thing every day - I kind of just follow him around, talking and singing, showing him what things are. We also read a lot of books. He likes to flip pages by himself and pick the book. He's pretty much the cutest kid around.
It's really fun to see his personality coming out. He's such a little clown. Always laughing and being silly. He's also a very curious little boy. It's so fun to watch him learn and to show him how things work.
Ryan's face lights up when Tyler comes home from work. You can just tell that he loves his dad so much. They have so much fun together, rolling around on the floor, tickling and laughing. Everything gets dropped when dad comes home.
We get to come home for Christmas in less then a month and I'm just so excited about that. Actually getting home is going to be a slight gong show though. We have 2 flights to get to Vancouver and then a 4 hours wait in the airport before finally getting on another plane to come home. I'm hoping Ryan will just sleep the whole time we are flying. That would make things so much easier. I don't think he will because he'll want to look around and squirm and move. The 4 hours in the airport might not be that bad though. With so much to see, we can go for walks, eat some dinner, and entertain everyone else in the airport. I'm just so excited to be coming home again. I can't wait to see family and friends and nieces and nephews and cousins and everyone!!! I'm also pretty excited to give nieces and nephews gifts!! They are awesome and I can't wait!
So what else is new with us? Hmm, well, probably lots of stuff since it's been so long since we've written anything on here.
Ryan lived through his first, and I hope only earthquake and tsunami warning. And it was more frightening then the first one we dealt with. We were at a halloween party with a bunch of friends when someone got a phone call asking if they were all right. This party guest was confused because we didn't feel anything. She hung up and almost immediately got another phone call regarding her safety. We started to wonder what was going on and how serious it all was. Tyler and I decided to leave the party and check everything out. We learned it was a 7.7 earthquake that happened about 180 miles north west of where we are. That send us into semi-panic mode. Having Ryan makes us take things a little more serious. Right away, Tyler went out and reconnected the vehicle battery (long story about that but the gist of it is that our car battery died and when we got a new one, we didn't leave it hooked up so it wouldn't drain itself) while I gathered everything important we might need if our town got destroyed. Blankets, warm clothes for all 3 of us, food, knives, Tyler's rifle, computer, camera and even the cat made it. It took us about half and hour to get all this stuff together and be out the door. And it's pretty tough to gather everything while trying to stay calm and keep Ryan settled down. Having a baby makes escaping from a tsunami more complicated.
I put Ryan in the car while Tyler hauled the totes into the trunk. And then we were off. We drove through a stop sign, promising to stop twice next time as we headed up to higher ground. We went almost half way up the mountain before we finally stopped and waited. We were talking with our parents, making sure they knew we were ok. And then we sat there. I had a very strange feeling. I had the adrenaline coursing through my body but now we were just sitting there and it felt like we should still be doing something. And then nothing happened. We turned on the radio and listened. It turns out that there wasn't anything to be scared of because that type of earthquake doesn't produce huge tsunami waves. We ended the mini adventure by going over to Jan and Carl's place and hanging out with a bunch of other people. They live on the highest street in town so we figured we would be safe there.
When it was time to come home and go to sleep, I didn't sleep well. All I could think about was the next earthquake and all the what if's. It makes me really want to move to Alberta where almost nothing bad happens weather-wise.
I'm trying to find a picture to show how close the quake was to us but I can't find anything. I found a website, http://www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca/index-eng.php that shows all the recent earthquakes and aftershocks and it's really amazing how many actually happen around here.
Something else to report isn't new at all. Our upstairs neighbor must have bought and started to train elephants due to the amount of noise that comes from up there. It's actually unbelievable to me how much one person can stomp around. It's only a problem when she wakes Ryan up. But, she has this uncanny ability of knowing when he is sleeping and that is when she stomps the hardest with her heels, so I guess it's usually a huge problem. I know we could go up there and ask her to keep it down but it's not her fault and she isn't doing it on purpose. And it's her home up there. I'm not sure I would be impressed if someone asked me to not walk so hard, or to stop walking around after 8. I also think she keeps every single thing she owns in the drawers in her room. We lay in bed and just listen to her get ready for bed. She opens about 20 drawers before she finally stops. I just want to scream because I don't understand how one person can open so many drawers. It's frustrating. She just woke Ryan up too so I think I'm going to sign off for now.
I would like to blog more often but we will see how that goes.
